On June 29th our church members were treated to an inspiring message given by Dr. Bruce Main, president of Urban Promise Ministries, Camden at all three (3) morning worship services. Dr. Main didn’t come alone….we were joyously and spiritually filled with beautiful music and ‘stepping’ (a form of both verbal and physical worship of Christ).
Thirty-nine Urban Promise Interns (from all over the world) were commissioned during the 11 am worship service along with our youth and young adults who were going into the mission field this summer.
After a ‘lite’ lunch the Urban Promise Interns, singers and steppers went to Manasquan Beach for a restful and fun afternoon before beginning their hard work the following day.
Urban Promise Intern Program provides urban youth ministry training, combining theological education with hands-on ministry experience. By inviting people who are foreign to inner-city communities, Urban Promise also seeks to bridge the chasm between ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The interns work together in ‘camps’/teams to lead summer camps; teach classes, run small discipleship groups, participate in daily devotions, weekly inner-city ministry classes and Sunday fellowship.
The Mission Commission was asked to provide ‘prayer partners’ who were willing to pray for the Interns while they work in Camden through Urban Promise Ministries. The commission matched various church groups with Intern ‘camps’. All Access High School group has been praying for Camp Freedom; Mosaic Young Adults- Camp Peace; PW- Camp Faith; Lay Pastors- Camp Grace; Deacons- Camp Spirit; Elders- Camp Saved. What a blessing to not only assist with financial support but to also have a prayerful relationship supporting Christian youth and young adults as they do what Jesus instructed us to do.
The Mission Commission of First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan began financially supporting Urban Promise Ministries in 2007. It is our intention to continue supporting this worthy mission through our annual budgeted monies. Additionally, monies have been donated specifically to Urban Promise by our membership and the Mission Commission joyfully forwards those monies directly to Urban Promise.
The Mission Commission will continue to provide our church membership updates on the work of Urban Promise and forward any specific needs both financially, physically and prayerfully. If the ministry of Urban Promise touches your heart please consider joining the Mission Commission in its support of Urban Promise.
